Traditional Chinese mooncakes are eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, falling in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. The date parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. The full moon is traditionally a symbol of reunion (tuan yuan), and the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions and “gathering around the hearth” (yuan means round). Families gather to admire the moon, eat mooncakes and partake in other cultural traditions. Enjoying the moon is an ancient tradition in China, which goes back nearly 1,400 years to the Zhou Dynasty. Today, mooncakes are still considered an indispensable delicacy of the festival and are offered by friends and colleagues. They always feature in family gatherings during the festivities.
This year, The Peninsula Bangkok’s Executive Chinese Chef Jackie Ho and his team will make 250,000 mooncakes by hand in 39 days, using approximately 10 tonnes of ingredients including duck eggs, which give the very best quality and flavour, along with The Peninsula’s own secret recipe for soft pastry crust. Featuring newly designed packaging, only a limited quantity is freshly made every day by Chef Ho and the team. The bestseller, the egg custard mooncake, is created from a traditional secret recipe made famous by The Peninsula Hong Kong. No preservatives are used in the making of the Peninsula mooncakes.
The Peninsula mooncakes are priced at THB 2,600 nett for a case of four boxes of eight, THB 610 nett per box of eight and THB 160 nett for a special, limited edition box.
