Celebrate the Lantern Festival at Maison Souvannaphoum

| August 27, 2013

Maison Souvannaphoum is the perfect place to explore and experience the charms of Luang Prabang. With its location in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage town, it’s the perfect base for discovering the cultural treasures of a place where history, nature and the spiritual world are woven into one. It promises to provide you and your family with unforgettable moments. Step back in time.

From 19-20 October 2013, experience local tradition and an important celebration. “Boun Lai Heua Fai”, also known as “The Lantern Festival”, marks the end of the 3-month Buddhist Lent and pays respect to the Naga (spirit of the waters). At night, handmade, colourfully decorated boats are illuminated and paraded through the streets of Luang Prabang to the Mekong River where they are ceremonially set on fire and launched on the water as a offering for good luck. Flowers are also laid in the water and floating paper lanterns released into the air. It is a truly magical and photogenic event.

While the celebration will be a highlight, there are plenty of other activities, sights and natural wonders to fill your stay in Luang Prabang. Just a few ways to have fun with your family:

Explore the historic centre by bicycle, stopping to admire a few of the town’s 34 temples. Pop into a café for a French pastry or cross the Nam Khan River, cycling 20-minutes to the Paper and Weaving Village.
Ride an elephant at The Elephant Village sanctuary. If you’re adventurous, do the 1-Day Mahout program to learn how to ride it bareback and go down into the river for your elephant’s bath time.
Swim in the turquoise waters of Kuang Si Waterfall, a spectacular set of falls, only 45-minutes from town.

Maison Souvannaphoum was once the residence of a Prince of Laos. The historic property has 4 Residence Wing and 20 Garden Wing rooms with the perfect blend of old world charm and contemporary sophistication. The rooms and grounds are designed to be your home away from home. Dine on Lao and Indo-Chinese cuisine at our restaurant Elephant Blanc. Unwind beside the pool or get the luxurious royal treatment at the award-winning Angsana Spa.

Maison Souvannaphoum is situated at the mouth of the peninsula, an easy walk to the historic town center, the sights, restaurants, night market and river – but away from the hustle and bustle.
