James Suckling, CEO of JamesSuckling.com and Wine Editor of Asia Tatler, is set to introduce more than 200 of Italy’s very finest wines, almost double the number from last year’s premiere Great Wines of Italy for a Grand Tasting set for November 30 at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Grand Ballroom and an exclusive Chef’s Extravaganza stand-up dinner on November 29, 2015

World wine wizard James Suckling is back with the second Bangkok edition of his ‘Great Wines of Italy’ tasting showcase, cementing the Thai capital’s place as one of Asia’s great wine cities and sending ripples of excitement through the city’s rapidly expanding ranks of serious wine connoisseurs.

With last year’s debut of the concept hailed as a success and a sharp uptick in interest in Italian wines reported by Bangkok’s proliferation of Italian restaurants, Mr Suckling has taken a bullish stance for ’round two’ and almost doubled the number of wines available for tasting, all of them top-rated by his proprietary ranking system.

“Last year we introduced Bangkok to Italian wine in earnest, with 120 wines all ranked 90+ or higher by me available for tasting,” Mr Suckling said. “This year, we have over 200 fantastic top quality wines from some of the very best estates, including Ornellaia Solaia/Tignanello (Marchesi Antinori), Bibi Graetz & Roberto Voerzio, in addition to many others, including two recently released wines I’ll be presenting in person to guests, members of the press and over 1,000 wine trade professionals and wine consumers.”

He said Thailand continued to reinforce its position as one of Asia’s most dynamic premium wine markets combining a growing local thirst for the best bottles with an expanding number of visitors drinking good wine while on holiday.

“Thais love Italian wines in ever increasing numbers, and we expect this will be reflected in the turn-out this year at the Chef’s dinner and the grand tasting,” Mr Suckling, who lives in Hong Kong, said. “If you are a true wine lover, this is not an event to be missed – to have more than 200 wines all rated 90+ by me and available in the one place for tasting … you couldn’t even do that in Italy.

“While many of these esteemed suppliers already have representation in Thailand, a large number are eager to have their wines tried in Thailand for the first time,” Mr Suckling said. “All the wine has been airfreighted in refrigerated containers by sponsors Cathay Pacific to guarantee perfect bottles despite high Thai temperatures,” he said.

Mr Suckling will once again provide his own collection of exquisite, bespoke Lalique wine glasses to add one more layer of refinement and sophistication to the proceedings. A selection of Italian appertisers will be on offer, including specially imported cheeses, salamis and hams.

Mr Sucking also hosts the exclusive, invitation only and sold out Great Wines of Italy Bangkok Chef Extravaganza, which takes place on November 29th, the evening before the Grand Tastings, and which this year sees Michelin-Starred Massimo Mentasti of Villa Sparina resort and wine estate in Piedmont, near Genoa ensconced in the kitchen of The Residence 305 at the Grand Hyatt for a stand-up evening of wines paired to Chef Massimo’s sublime cuisine. Just 80 lucky wine lovers have been invited to this refined evening of indulgence and appreciation.

The Grand Ballroom of the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel is once again the venue for the second Bangkok iteration of Great Wines of Italy, following two years of success in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The showcase is part of Mr Suckling’s Great Wines of the World tasting series, a visionary undertaking that has seen sold-out events featuring the best wines and wine-makers from Italy, Bordeaux, Chile, Argentina and the world at large in New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Shanghai. He has various sponsors for his events including Cathay Pacific, Lalique glassware, and the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
