A shot of whisky, a splash of lemon and a big serving of creativity were the winning ingredients that awarded Supawit Muttarattana from the St. Regis Bangkok top honors at the Diageo World Class “Raising The Bar”, Thailand 2012.
Conducted through a six month series of competitions, Diageo World Class is the largest international cocktail education program that will culminate in July 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where over 50 participants from all over the world will vie for the title of “World Class Bartender of the Year 2012”. Supawit will do not just his hotel proud, but also his country, when he represents Thailand at the finals.
The Thailand installation of the competition was held on the 6 June 2012 at the Aloft Bangkok where 40 bartenders from the city’s top hotels and bars pitted creativity, technique and the art of mixology in an attempt to impress a discerning panel of judges.
Supawit’s winning concoction, “The Striding” drew inspiration from a cowboy striding along the red carpet at a Hollywood party. The recipe of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, lemon and orange essence, house-made coffee bitter with smoked vanilla served over an orange blossom ice ball and dusted with edible golden glitter set him apart from his peers, bar none.
A relative newcomer to the world of cocktails, Supawit began his career in beverage in 2007 as a barista. Inspired by the bartenders he worked alongside, and through his own curiosity he studied mixology on his own time and joined The St. Regis Bangkok in February 2011 as a bartender at the Italian restaurant Jojo. In April this year, Supawit moved to The St. Regis Bar where he works the length of the bar, shaking and stirring for celebrities and Bangkok’s social elite.
“It is an honor to not only represent my hotel, but also the nation of Thailand at the finals next month,” said Supawit. “I hope to do everyone proud.” When asked what he enjoys as an after work tipple, he says with a grin, “Whisky… on the rocks.”
