Australian with Pure Blonde

My younger brother just came back from the US yesterday. Not being in fast paced Bangkok for almost 2 years, he is probably not familiar with anything. I guess taking him to a place not familiar for booth of us would make us more at a same pace. I’ve heard of a new pub called the “Australian” located in Sukhumvit soi 11, had something good going on. Not giving him a chance to recover from the time change, we headed off that evening to this place through the Sukhumvit traffic rush hour (Phrakanong, Eakamai, Thonglor, Emporium, Asoke, lower Sukhumvit). Surprisingly the traffic wasn’t that bad, it took us a little more than 20 minutes from Sukhumvit 85 to soi 11. It was either the light traffic or it was my rush to get a nice cold one, that took us there that fast, you would have to ask him. Our luck didn’t stop there, finding a parking in soi 11 was something close to impossible but we got one on the opposite side of Bed Supper Club right away.

At the entrance of the “Australian Pub & BBQ”, it was an nice open air seating with high ceiling, where you can smoke, drink, eat, and watch the busy street of soi 11 all at the same time. Further inside with air conditioning we were seated in one of the sofa cubicles. We were greeted by khun Max Goonan, the big muscular, bald general manager, with a very heavy Australian accent. If happen to be there you won’t miss him, don’t forget to say Hi to the nice guy. Looking around we could see plasma screens everywhere, with live Australian rugby. I’m sure they have other Australian sports events there as well. The space is decorated with corrugated iron, and photos of well known Australians, like Keith Ledger, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe. There is also a large grill at the front, a long bar that stretches from the road to the very end of the dinning space, and more private seating upstairs.

As it is an Australian pub all we could look for is a Pure Blonde. From what we are seeing there are many of those here, so we ordered 4 of them right at our table. It came chilled just the way we like them. After finishing one of the smooth and light Pure Blondes our orders came. “Potato Wadges with Sour Cream and Sweet Chili sauce” the potatoes are really well cooked, crispy outside nice fluffy and buttery inside which went along so well with Sour Cream. We ordered 3 varieties of mains to share; Chicken Parmigiana, fried chicken toped with tomato sauce and cheese served with fries and salad. Next is an interesting “Fish Pie in white chive sauce. Australian Angus T-Bone Steak” was very well grilled, tender inside and a bit chewy outside, it is served with black peppercorn sauce. The steak itself taste perfect but with the sauce it was even more flavorful.

On to desserts, we ordered “The Aussie Pavlova”. Pavlova named after the Russian ballet dancer Ánna Pávlova. She attracted her audience when she visited Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. It is a large meringue like almost the size of a cake, it was airy and light served with fresh cream and berries. It is not easy to make a meringue this big and this good, the pastry chef here must be really good. To end the dinner we had “Ice Cream Gateaux” served with orange coulis.
