Bangkok: The Rapidly Advancing Smart City

| January 4, 2022

A smart city is one that utilizes several electronic measures to manage the distribution of assets. A smart city uses artificial intelligence powered by machine learning for local administration. All civil services ranging from tax collection to telecommunication are managed digitally, leading to efficient utilization of resources and workforce. Heck, even data collection and its subsequent analysis are done electronically.

The benefits of a smart city compared to a ‘traditional’ city are numerous. For one, a smart city has exponentially less paperwork, thus saving one of the most precious resources on the planet! Secondly, since gathering information and data is digital, it saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent on physically compiling tons and tons of records. Lastly, having all data digitally on servers armed with strong threat detection programs protects it from external tampering. Smart cities also offer enhanced security in the form of CCTV cameras and digital IDs.

The new smart city: Bangkok

As more and more countries are shaping up to create smart cities, Thailand is making quick strides in establishing its position among them. Bangkok was inducted into ASEAN Smart Cities in 2017 and, since then, has seen a tremendous increase in the number of features that make up a smart city.

Bangkok is already a smart city and has taken many steps to bridge the gap between sustainability of the environment and technological progression. The smart city architecture aims to enhance the basic facilities such as a plentiful supply of clean drinking water and electricity, development of proper roads and infrastructure as the first step.

On the aspect of networks and signal technology, Bangkok has taken steps to implement the game-changing 5G network to facilitate the transfer of data at speeds that are far superior to any other network type. As a matter of fact, Southeast Asia’s first and largest 5G smart-hospital is in Bangkok.

It is to be noted that a part of smart entertainment is still limited to online offshore websites such as online casinos, and you can read more about gambling news here.

Challenges that lie ahead

While Bangkok has made its mark as a rising smart city, there are a bunch of obstacles that it must face on the road ahead. The rules and regulations that were followed to a T until recently might hamper the development of the smart city. Furthermore, data collection might prove to be a big hurdle because there exists a fine line between the collection of data to ensure the normal functioning of society and unlawful probing into the lives of the citizens. Also, shifting all physical, administrative work to digitally maintained records is easier said than done. Not to mention the level of pollution must be lowered before making progress on other fronts.

What the future holds for Bangkok

Bangkok definitely holds a lot of potential and is expected to rise in the ASEAN ranking as time goes on. With companies investing billions of dollars towards making Bangkok more technologically advanced, it’s only a matter of time before it emerges as one of the biggest smart cities, not just in Asia but all across the globe!
