Centara Grand West Sands Resorts & Villa Phuket

| July 5, 2013

At the airport we were greeted by the hospitable staff at the Centara lounge. There are a couple of resort lounges at the Phuket international airport, only big international resort chains with large amount of room numbers provide them. Even though Centara is a local Thai chain but it’s been growing rapidly internationally and locally. Especially in Phuket there are 7 resorts and hotels, offering more than a 1000 rooms.

The one we stayed at for this trip was Centara Grand West Sands Resorts & Villa Phuket. It is right next to the Phuket international airport. You can probably walk to the resort if not for airport security. The short drive was a treat compared to other destinations that is further away and usually takes 30-120 minutes drive.

The resort occupies a large area on Mai Khao beach. Clusters of villas and medium sized buildings are spread throughout the area. Our room was the “luxury 2 bedroom suite”. It is very spacious, feels like an apartment. It was probably meant for long stays. The décor is very minimal even though I like minimal but it seem too little for me. A bit more décor, maybe some vases flowers and paintings would have made it much more appealing. That being said we did enjoy staying here. It did feel like home every member of the family had their own space. The kitchen was very well equipped with modern cookware and silverware. In the master bath room there is a very nice Jacuzzi that fits 2. There is a large terrace that looks out to the garden. Being so close to the airport, I immediately thought I would hear the planes departure and land but windows were very well sealed, you cannot hear anything from the outside.

Not only the beautiful beach of Mai Khao is the attraction but being so close the airport watching the plane go up and land is a very interesting site to see. Just a little walk by the beach, there is a place to sit by the sea and watch the plane land.

Another main attraction is the Splash Jungle Water Park; an amusement park in the same premises of the resort. Guest staying at the resort gets unlimited free entrance. Otherwise it would cost 1290 baht for adult and 650 baht for children. The park offers both relaxing theme pools and adventurist rides. My favorite is the Boomerango slider; a thrilling very steep drop that takes you up and down to a splash pool. It’s a very convenient way to get an adrenalin rush.
