Sunday Brunch at Rain Tree Cafe, Plaza Athenee Bangkok

The Rain Tree Café’s Sunday brunch, at Plaza Athenee Bangkok, has a lot to offer for those who love to have a great meal with friends or families on the weekend. Located on Wireless road right across the US ambassador’s residence, the restaurant offers a relaxing ambience, a perfect set up for a special meal. What distinguish the Rain Tree Café’s Sunday brunch from its competitors are the superb quality of ingredients it uses and its full bar. On that day, I began with a drink that the manager recommended called raspberry meringue-- a delicious fruity cocktail drink with creamy meringue on top.
The restaurant offers a variety of cuisines such as Thai, Chinese, Japanese, European and American that makes it impossible to try everything in just one visit. A big display of Fish Roe Bar with wide selections of salmon roe, shrimp roe, flying fish roe, etc. served with toast, blinis, sushi rice and other condiments, is set up to greet the customers when they enter the restaurant. For Japanese food and raw food fans, the sushi bar here offers great imported salmon, tuna, octopus and oysters; especially the salmon here is very tender that it almost melts in your mouth. However, what satisfies me the most here is the Alaskan king crab. Yes, that’s right! all you can eat sweet and juicy boiled and chilled Alaskan king crabs with lemon, clarified butter, cocktail sauce and spicy Thai sauce.
Perfect seared duck foie gras with a bit of crust, served with dark fruity sweet sauce, is also spectacular. At the live grilled station, there are plenty of fresh Thai and imported seafood such as fresh snapper, rock lobster, giant shrimp, huge scallops, etc. Top grade imported grilled lamb chops is also a must try. For me, three medium rare chops served with a bit of mint sauce on the side is a meal to die for. If you are not full yet, don’t forget to try the imported juicy sirloin steak from Australia. Although the pasta bar is quite small but its creamy fettuccini with seafood is pleasant.
However, for those who have a sweet tooth, saving some space for desserts is a must. Their pastry chef from France assures that the quality of desserts here is comparable to France. I was not disappointed in the small chocolate dome and various cakes. Chocolate fountain is also a fabulous remedy for chocoholic. Last but not least, the Rain Tree Café’s Sunday brunch serves only Haagen Dazs ice cream for real ice cream lovers.
