If you love dining with the chef cooking in front of you, you might be familiar with "Teppan-yaki." This is one of Japanese cooking style in which the food is cooked in front of you on teppan or hot iron plate. In Thailand, there are many Teppan-yaki restaurants but there is one that is famous all over the world.

"Benihana" in Japanese means 'red flower.' This Teppan-yaki restaurant first opened in New York in 1964 by Rocky (Hiroaki) Aoki, an ex-wrestler in Olympic team. The differences at Benihana from other Teppan-yaki restaurant is the show from the chef. Since then, because of Benihana, dining in Teppan-yaki restaurant has become a trend to all over the U.S. and around the world. The restaurant now has two branches in Thailand. One at Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa and the other at Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa.

This spacious restaurant was decorated in Japanese style. All the seats are counters of hot teppan for 2-5 people. Stepping in, we heard the laughter of customers who were watching the skillful chef perform with great amusement.
We ordered a set of seafood steak, a combination of salad, soup, seafood steak and Benihana's fried rice. While waiting, we had the Marriott Smoothiesa refreshing peach smoothies which is not too sweet or sour.

After being greeted by the head chef Piya Augsornthoung, we got started with salad topped with ginger dressing and mushroom with fried onion soup, followed by a large and fresh sushi set of California roll, salmon sashimi, pteria pengeuin sushi, and other seafood offered in the dish. We were half full with these starters.
Our chef finally appeared with the trolley of cooking ingredients. He was ready to cook and entertain us during our lunch. After being greeted by the humorous Chef Kraisorn Yimloen , he provided us with dips in three types: chili, mustard with mayonnaise, and ginger dipping sauce which each goes well with each type of steaks. The chef show-off his skilll by flinging his tools around while cooking our steak with side item of fried onion and sukini followed by fresh grilled shrimp which goes very well with ginger and spicy chili dip.

Cooking Teppanyaki seems to be simple since there are only few ingredients in use: oil, salt, pepper, sesame seeds, and butter. The trick is having it done right.
We were amused again with the show on preparing the next steaks. They were fresh scallop steak and followed by salmon steaks which were very good with mustard with mayonnaise sauce.
Next, chef Kraisorn was ready to prepare Benihana's original fried rice of which its secret lies in Benihana's garlic butter. Before he acually cooked, Chef Kraisorn challenged us to try catching the eggs in the air with a metal spatula. It was enjoyable but it would be more enjoyable if we did not break the eggs. This final dish in set goes perfectly with the chili sauce. We ended our meal with a tempura-like fried vanilla ice-cream topped with green tea sauce.
fried ice cream

It was fun seeing the chef prepare our meal and play at the same time right in front of us.This place is recommended if you prefer a fun an entertaining meal. Besides the stuffed belly, it's the joy and happiness you get from Benihana.
