Mahanaga Restaurant is located at the very begining of Sukhumvit Soi 29. It is in a peaceful residential area surrounded by houses and hi rise buildings.

Recently, we had a chance to visit Mahanaga Restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant, you can tell there is something different here. From the parking lot, there is a little foyer with a fountain that provides a peaceful refuge to the busy street of Sukhumvit. We entered Baan Bar which is an 80 year old colonial building, accented with middle eastern decoration with some thai ornaments. The bar has comfortable sofas to seat and talk while having an aperitif. The Rococo furnishing and chandelier is juxtaposed with the wooden interior. Along with the two recently built dining space form an elegant court yard.
Food at Mahanaga is a Thai + Thai fusion. The dish served here uses a mixer of Thai and western inexpedience. The food is not too spicy, very appropriate for anyone who can not take too much chilli. We selected some dishes from the wide selection offered from the menu. Satay Ruam; consists of marinated pork, chicken satey served with pita bread, peanut sauce and sour cucumber salad. The chicken was a bit dry maybe we were talking too much, it dried out during our conversation. Then, followed by a Thai salad: Yam Poo Nim Mamaung. It is deep-fried soft shell crab with spiced mango salad. Soft shell crab deep fried is crunchy and goes along well with the mango salad. The third one is soup: Tom Yum Giew Goong. It is comprised of spicy shrimp, chicken and pork wonton with straw mushroom in a tom yum brooth. It has a unique taste and it's good, and the taste is familiar but it doesn't taste anything like tom yum we are used to. Next, main menu: Kaeh Yang Sauce Mamaung. It is grilled New Zealand lamb with spiced vegetable and mango sauce served with stir-fried egg noodle. For dessert: Deep-fried banana with ice cream. The banana is covered with shredded coconut served with Vanilla ice cream. Another sweet dessert is mango & sticky rice, with coconut milk sauce.

Apart from the romantic Asian influenced ambiance, Mahanaga also serves interesting adapted Thai food. If you are bored of traditional Thai food, this could be good alternative.
