When thinking about Kaset-Nawamin area, the first thing that comes in mind is a road full of big restaurants. “Koh Lanta” is one of the restaurants located in the said area. It is not a very big place with 2 stories. Looking from the outside, it was an interesting proportioned architecture using many Southeast Asian elements and architectural vocabulary. On the other hand, when we stepped into the restaurant, the juxtaposed decoration of many different ornaments caught our attention. Firstly, a bunch of jars pile up to the ceiling forming weird columns. Then we saw a wall decorated by ceramic jar’s covers. There are also tall brass-lamps that we rarely get to see elsewhere.

Most of the sitting area is on the second floor. The entire floor is open-air. Some tables are under a high ceiling and some are not. Khun Pum, the owner, kindly escorted us to our table on the second floor. There was not much of a view from the second floor but the unique interior decoration, the blowing wind and the band playing nice live (Thai and English songs) made up for it.
Khun Pum recommended 4 signature dish of Koh Lanta for us to try. The first one is Pla Tubtim Koei Teun which is fried fish covered with ingredient of Mieng (red onions, peanuts, roasted coconut, dried chili peppers and dried shrimps) sauce mixed with mayonnaise. It looked like a typical fish dish at first. However, once we tried it, it was a treat. The highlight of this menu is the fish. It was perfectly fried. It’s crispy outside and soft and moist inside this is true even when it sits in the sauce for a long while before we had time to finish it. The second one is Keng Lueng Poo Khai which is large sea crab with lots of eggs (crab’s eggs) boiled in yellow curry. This dish is usually made of fish, so it is interesting how Koh Lanta chose to use crabs in this menu. The soup is rich in spice. The large crab is very fresh and full of crab eggs. For this dish, the crabs will be served at the minimum weight of 0.5-0.7 Kg. The price will vary accordingly to the weight. (95 Bht per 0.1 Kg.) The next one is Yum Koh Lanta. This dish is simply Thai herbal salad (Mieng) with dried shrimp. It is definitely one healthy dish. However, it is similar to Mieng sauce in the first dish and the dressing was a bit too sweet. Also, Last but not least, Pork spare ribs steamed in wine with vegetable. The pork was slow cooked until it was tender. The tasty sauce blended well with it. There weren’t any hard bones in our dish only the edible soft bones which provide interesting texture.

Koh Lanta is overall one of the nice places to enjoy Thai food in Kaset-Nawamin area. It maybe a little bit difficult to find but the food is absolutely worth trying.
