Sex show, strip clubs, bars, specialty bars would come first in mind when the name is mentioned. Silom was the first gravel road ever in Bangkok. Before the major transportations are by water way, the ground path ways were just dirt and mud. When foreigners working for the king settled in Bangkok, they needed a road for riding there horses. King Rama 4 had Silom built with Charoenkrung road. The Patpongpanich family who own some land near Silom, todays Patpong since 1946. The family built the roads and some shophouses. The old house was torn down and the klong filled in to make room for more shophouses. At that time there was only one bar but a very popular one. People started calling that area Patpong, just because that one famous bar. From then onwards more bars were open. Part of the boom of Patpong was it became a regular place U.S. troops from the Vietnam War come to have good time. Strip club like bars line up along the soi. Not like american strip clubs where here you can touch the dancers but they appear more conservative when dancing, very contradicting. Girls working in these bars are mostly from poor Esarn (north eastern part of Thailand) farming families. Beware of sex show scams where they lure tourist to see the shows for cheap beer. สีสมคือถนนลูกรังสายแรกของไทยเรา ก่อนหน้าที่เรายังเดินทางกันโดยทางเรือเป็นหลักนั้น ทางเดินมักจะเต็มไปด้วยดินและโคลน เมื่อมีชาวต่างชาติเข้ามารับราชการในประเทศไทย พวกเขาเหล่านั้นมีความต้องการถนนสำหรับการเดินทางโดยใช้ม้า ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 จึงมีการสร้างสีลมขึ้นตรงบริเวณถนนเจริญกรุง ความเป็นจริงแล้ว ชื่อที่เรียกกันในปัจจุบันว่า พัฒน์พงศ์ นั้นมาจากชื่อของตระกูล พัฒน์พงศ์พานิช ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของที่ดินผืนนี้ ตระกูลพัฒน์พงศ์พานิชได้ซื้อที่ดินผืนนี้ตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2489 บ้านหลังเก่าๆ ได้ถูกรื้อถอนออกไปและคูคลองก็มีการถมเพื่อนำพื้นที่มาสร้างห้องและบ้านเรือนต่าง ๆ เพิ่มขึ้น เดิมทีบริเวณนี้มีบาร์แห่งหนึ่งที่ได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างมากจนหลาย ๆ คนเริ่มเรียกที่นี่ว่า พัฒน์พงศ์อย่างที่เรา ๆ เรียกกันในปัจจุบัน หลังจากนั้นต่อมาผับและบาร์มากมายก็เริ่มก่อตัวมากขึ้นตามลำดับ ส่วนหนึ่งของบริเวณนี้กลายเป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนสำหรับกองกำลังทหารของสหรัสอเมริกาที่เข้าร่วมในสงครามเวียดนาม

ตราบจนกระทั้งปัจจุบันนี้ พัฒน์พงศ์กลายเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวยามค่ำคืนอันเต็มไปด้วยผับและบาร์มากมายที่ได้รับความนิยมจากนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติทั้งหลาย ที่นี่อาจจะเรียกได้ว่าเป็น strip club แบบชาติตะวันตกของกรุงเทพแห่งหนึ่งก็เป็นได้ แต่ต่างกันตรงที่คุณไม่อาจสัมผัสนักเต้นได้เหมือนแบบทางตะวันตก ผู้หญิงที่เป็นนักเต้นนั้นส่วนใหญ่เป็นคนอีสานที่ค่อนข้างยากจน ข้อควรระวังคือ บางครั้งนักท่องเที่ยวอาจถูกล่อหลอกให้เข้าไปชมการแสดงในราคาถูกแต่เมื่อเรียกเก็บเงินแล้วกลับพบว่าราคานั้นแพงลิบก็เป็นได้
