While voiding the Sukhumvit evening traffic, I stumbled on to a unique wine bar/ restaurant. The Lake House, an old house hidden in the sub soi of Sukhumvit 39. A large area of the property is fill with water surrounded by mature tropical plants. Once inside you will completely forget that you are in the center of town. The garden is luscious with large trees and tropical vegetation.

The house from the looks is around 50 years old or more but well maintained. There are seatings inside the house and spread out in the garden and there is a wine cellar. It was hard to believe that this venue has been open for only one month because the setting was in was so old and charming. The house use to be occupied by a famous Italian writer "Tiziano Terzani". Also the close friend of Jim Thompson used to live here. The House is also called the "Turtle house". Why? because there are big turtles living in the pond. The biggest one should weight around 200 kilograms. The biggest turtle I've seen out side the zoo or maybe even bigger. 
 

 We were there at around 6pm and was greeted by Dan one of the owner of this new wine bar/restaurant. Dan seated us in a large couch with tables and a large wide screen LCD tv. While seated we enjoyed the watching the ladies Australian open tennis tournament. After a while, a sweet young lady came with the menu to take our orders.

The menu has a mix of western and Thai items. The first one that was recommended was the Lake house Salad(Greek Salad) serve in a large bowl. Olives, feta cheese and many fresh vegetables with a lemon dressing worked so well together. A simple salad, well executed.

At the same time she brought us crispy calamari. Lightly battered calamari fried to golden. It was crispy soft chewy and moist all at the same time. Serve with lime juice a nice appetizer to start the meal. We were almost done with the appetizer, the mains had come. The chicken breast with white wine sauce was interesting. There were some slice chilies in the sauce which compliment the over all taste. Served with mash potatoes and vegetables. Next was the Beef Steak with cheese sauce. The tender beef with the tomato based cheese sauce went along very well. The home style food here are tasty. 




But what this place is focusing on are the wines. They have a simple selection of wines in the menu mostly new world, but a nice variety and very affordable. A bottle would cost around 1,000. In the cellar there were more wine selections. Since the 3 owners Dan Matt and Dan are from Australia a lot of the wines are from down under. There are many Penfolds collections. To go along with it there are cheese platters and Italian cold cuts. Every Fridays the bar organizes free wine tasting. We were there when they had an Angove's Long Row wines tasting. This wine we don't see much in Thailand. The owners got it from there friend who produces to the wine in Australia. The wines offered on tasting nights are sold in whole sale prices. After the tasting we ordered a bottle for only 750 baht.

Lake House: a unique jungle like setting in the heart of Sukhumvit, affordable wines and home style cooking.
