I try to avoid Sunday Brunches at five star hotels in Bangkok. Not that I don't like it, but it does add the extra weight I'm trying to lose. It is always temping and most of the time I always go over my limits. When the Peninsula has a seafood promotion, I had to check it out. The promotion is called the "Seafood Market" at the River Cafe and Terrace. It might not be correct to call it a brunch because it starts at 12:30pm and ends at 4:00 pm. So it could be a combined feast of 2 lunch and diner.

We arrived at around 2pm, the indoor tables were mostly filled. The River Cafe and Terrace also has riverside outdoor seatings but it was too hot that day to sit outside. At the buffet the most dominant item we see is the seafood. This is not just any seafood but premium items such as Boston lobster, King crab, and a variety if sashimi. After seated, I started at the seafood station, Lobster, king crab, a large crab(I think a dungeness crab), and some oysters. I have to say all of them were nice but the lobster dominates in tastes and looks. The oysters from France and the US was also very nice. Many condiments and sauce but I'd prefer it without or maybe a piece of lemon. This way you get the actual taste and really know how good it is.

Included with the buffet is a glass of chilled sparking wine, a very nice compliment with the seafood starter. We made many visits to the buffet. For appetizer I started with a variety of smoked salmon with rocket salad. Then an assortment of canapés such as duck liver terrine, scallop wakame, etc.

At the table we were asked if we wanted to try the clay pot specials. The day we were there they offered baked frog legs, baked black and white mussels. My 5 year old son loved the frog legs, he even ask for seconds.

Before the main we tried the pan seared foie gras made when ordered. Very high quality for a buffet. For the main there is a cutting station of beef prime ribs and a grill station of many types of meat. My daughter went for the prime ribs. She really liked it. From the grill station we had grilled lobster, lamb rack, and Australian grass fed beef fillet. The lobster was even better than the chilled one. The lamb and beef was cook to perfection the way I like it, medium rare.

I know it is a lot already and we didn't even have dessert yet. This is where it's heaven for the kids. All the chocolate cake and ice cream they wanted, we couldn't stop them. The chocolate fountain gets the most attention. The Pen Chocolatier created many varieties of bit sized chocolate with different fillings which is a treat for both the kids and the grown ups. The cakes are also recommended. I especially like the cheese cake with mango sherbet and vanilla ice cream. We were about to say check, the waiter ask if we'd like any coffee? Off course, how could we deny coffee on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. I can smell the attractive aroma of the cappuccino, it was large and came with thin slices of biscoti. A perfect way to end a perfect feast.

The Peninsula Bangkok’s Seafood Market is offered now until 31 October 2010, from 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm. For the price of 2,010++THB per adult, children aged 6 to 11 will only be charged THB 500, kids five years and below will dine free. For wine and dine the sommelier can come up with a matching for the preferred dishes for 280 THB a glass or 1,350 THB a bottle.
