Shangri-la Hotel Bangkok

Address:89 Soi Wat Suan Plu New Road, Bangrak
Bangkok 10500, Thailand
T:(66 2) 236 7777

Passing by the Taksin BTS station, one of the dominant buildings I’d see is the Shangri la. I always wonder about this place. It occupies one of the biggest area alongside the Chaopraya River. It has one of the most hotel rooms in Bangkok. The best way to experience the Shangri-La is to stay here. And it was a good occasion after the complete renovation of the whole hotel for its 25th year anniversary celebration.

There are two buildings, the Shangri-la wing and the smaller Krungthep wing. We made reservations to the King Terrace on the Shangri-la wing. Our spacious room was newly renovated and well appointed. I was surprised how well they maintain the hotel after 25 years. It must have been renovated frequently.

Apart from the beautiful room another main attraction here was the view. The terrace appeared very close to the river on the 12th floor.  It provides a 180 degree view of the river.  The Chaopraya was very busy and lively. I could spend the whole day enjoying the view here just watching the world go by.

After enjoying the hotel room it was time for lunch. The best place to have lunch at the Shangri-la is at the Next 2 Café. It is an all day riverside buffet restaurant. The buffets here are big. A wide variety of seafood, meats, and live cooking stations were offered for lunch. I like the raw oysters and some smoked salmon for starters.  The teriyaki cod at the live cooking station was a healthy choice. The irresistible Chinese crispy pork was cooked perfectly. The juicy pork meat and the crispy skin was a perfect combination.  There was also Indian food which makes the meal so varied. What makes it complete were all the dessert.

Coming here would not be complete without walking through the lobby corridors and gardens. The Shangri-La invested a lot in art. Contemporary paintings, reliefs and sculptures were spread throughout the hotel.  Even the pool is sculpturistic. The irregular formed pool has wide lifted edge was beautifully designed. The rock sculptures were very creative, subtle but enough to be impressed.

A large art piece at the stair case.
