When thinking of the Andaman Sea the number one destination would be “Phuket” but there are many other alternatives. Khao Lak is one of the first that comes to mind. It is more peaceful less developed and the cost of living is also less.  I’ve always wanted to go to Khao Lak. I had the opportunity when I organized the family trip to visit my in-laws in Trang.  It was also a driving trip, so we get to stop by and explore many places on our way.  Trang is about a 12 hour drive. Stopping over night somewhere in between would be a good break and a good opportunity to explore that area.

On our way back from Trang we stopped in Khao Lak for a couple of nights. The drive took longer than I expected but eye opening. We took default google map recommendation which guided us through a scenic route. I don’t know if google map knew it was a scenic route but it seemed to be the shortest route but one of the roads went through a rain forest mountain with uphill downhill twist and turns. When looking back at the map there was another road that had longer distant but with less turns which probably would have saved more time. But still the drive was fun and we arrive safely in the afternoon. I choose to stay at the Le Meridien because I’m pretty familiar with this brand and It is also known to be a children friendly resort.

The resort is located 10 km. north of the Khao Lak downtown area. The neighborhood area is pretty undeveloped with only a few other resorts nearby.  It is set on a large beach side property with many low rise buildings, restaurants, and facilities. The main building is the largest and the highest (2 floor) structure. At eye level it’s hidden by the many surrounding trees. There are a lot of accommodation types; standard rooms, suites, lagoon villas, beach front pool villas. Our room was a junior suite. It was very spacious, a living room with a mini kitchen and a bed room with large bathroom. There was a 42 inch tv in each room. The balcony looks out to the children’s pool.

There are 2 pools, the children’s pool and the main pool. As this is a child friendly resort the pool is as big as the main pool. There are water slides and waterfalls. The main pool is a large free form shape that looks out to the ocean.

The breakfast here is also something worth mentioning.  The buffet breakfast at Café Lilawadee had a huge selection from cold cuts to made to order items. What made a great start for my day was the omelet with a red chili and the gourmet french press coffee.

For guest that is staying in a suite or a villa, has an alternative to go to the Baan Thai restaurant for a more customize breakfast. In the menu had many options. What interest me was the signature design breakfast that is serve throughout at all Le Meridiens around the world.

As this is a large resort there are many areas to explore. Walking around we get to see different types of trees plants and flowers. The best part was the beach. The clear aqua waters and gentle waves provide a great dip in the Andaman Sea. Along with the warm and occasionally cool water from the waves was very refreshing.

One of the many activities I enjoyed most was wind surfing. The gentle wind and calm waves was ideal conditions for beginners. There were other water sports provided like the kayak and a small sail boat. For more relaxing activity was to enjoy the beach ambiance and just spend time at the beach benches provided overlooking the sunset.
