Japanese Kaiseki along Bangkok Chao Phraya river, Okura Cruise
Hello. Hello, hello.
On this episode, we take you on a cruise along the Chao Phraya River. But it’s not just any cruise. It’s one of the most luxurious and unique cruises you can find here in Bangkok.
Come along with us to experience this one of a kind dining experience.
The Okura Prestige Bangkok is a five star hotel located in the PloenChit area. It’s known for its Japanese lavish hospitality. Now they bring this on a moving vessel on the Chao Phraya River.
It’s always nice to dine where the environment is constantly changing. Inside, It’s very beautifully decorated with Japanese influence and a very high ceiling.
We start with a Kitaya Junmai Ginjo. It’s a dry sake with beautiful melon aroma and a sweet finish.
The dinner here is a Kaiseki style course menu. If you don’t know what kaiseki is, watch till the end. So you know.
First course. Zensai or appetizers.
- This is fermented squid with vegetables. Sweet, savory with a bit of acidity.
- The star of this one is monkfish liver and mango miso. Very rich fatty. Think of it as foie gras of the sea.
- This is a delicate one. Goma tofu, Instead of soy, it’s made with sesame chewier flavored with light soy and snow crab.
We took a break from the meal to go to the upper deck to enjoy the view. Calm. Peaceful, Magnificent view of the Chao Phraya River.
Next course is called and also Otsukuri. A variety of sashimi.
- Starting with this beautiful piece of trout.
- This white Mikandai fish is fed with orange peel.
- This red clam hokkigai is known for its sweetness and chewy texture.
- The hamachi here is rich, buttery, and has a snappy texture.
- Other pieces are the sweet shrimp Akami and the fatty Otoro.
Next is Mushimono, a steamed dish, Japanese egg custard. Flavored with aromatic fish broth, Snow crab and caviar.
Oshinogi is a light dish that complements the sake. In our case is grilled eel served with salad and his sesame jelly dressing.
We’re just halfway into our dinner. A toilet break in this beautiful space would be nice.
The first main course is a Sendai Wagyu sirloin, A4. With teriyaki balsamic sauce and a pickled wasabi dip. It’s a flavorful, beefy, fatty delicacy.
I was surprised, It’s rare to see this high quality beef on a cruise.
Next is two courses served together.
A soup of snow crab dumpling, shimeji mushroom, aosa seaweed. And a brush of the real ponzu orange.
The dumpling is very flavorful. You can tell it’s made mostly of crab. And the beautiful scent of ponzu complements the fish broth.
Yes! And you get sushi too. There’s many fish, we start with the lighter taste fish. You can tell by its light color
- Like this shima aji.
- Even though later in color, but the flounder has more fat than the previous fish.
- This is a Tsubugai clam. Sweet and very interesting crisp texture.
- The sweet shrimp with flying fish roe is always flavorful.
- We end sushi with a powerful fatty fish Toro with pickled daikon.
For dessert, a beautiful assorted fruit with honey jelly. Very refreshing. We start with the lighter tastes and end with the most powerful, which is the Japanese melon.
After the meal, we spent some time at the roof deck.
This is a unique Bangkok cruise that there’s nothing like it. Starting with the spacious cabin with high ceiling and the beautiful deck.
Most of all is the Kaiseki meal. That may be even better than the ones you can find on land. At a fairly reasonable price at 4,600++ THB.
